I was born on September
10, 1981, in Louisville, Kentucky. My parents almost named me Calvin Augustinius George, but instead they named me after a
pilgrim, Christian, in John Bunyan's book, Pilgrim's Progress. From a very early age I traveled the world with my father,
going to ancient castles and musty cathedrals. Following the footprints of thousands of pilgrims who have gone before, I journeyed
to distant lands where God intervened in history and worked in mighty ways.
At the age of eight, I came to know of
the goodness and grace of God. Shortly after, I gave my life to Christ and was baptized. I dived into the Psalms, reading
them until the Psalmist’s words became my own. I plunged into Romans and sat at the feet of the Apostle Paul as he explained
the reality of my depravity. But I think my favorite book of the Bible was the Gospel of John, where Jesus is painted as the
light and hope of the world.
In 2000, I graduated from Briarwood High-school in Birmingham, Alabama, and went to Samford
University and majored in art. Art intrigued me and the more I painted the more I understood the Great Artist who scattered
the stars and watercolored the world. Though I enjoyed sketching, I sensed God urging me into full time ministry. On the morning
of December 13, 2003, I graduated from college and later that evening was married to Rebecca Pounds, the love of my life.
In
the fall of 2004, I enrolled as a student at Beeson Divinity School, an interdenominational seminary where I pursued the Master
of Divinity degree. Instead of painting, God opened opportunities for me to write, and I traded my easel for a laptop. Charles
Spurgeon had long been a hero of mine and I wrote a biography of him for Christian Focus Publications. I began to develop
a passion for communicating God's truth in simple, earthy language, and I wrote a book about pilgrimage called Sacred Travels,
that was published by InterVarsity Press. In May, 2007, I graduated from seminary and am currently taking a year off to spend
time with God and write several more books before beginning a Ph.D in theology in Scotland.
