Lawrence (Larry) Hitt, Esqu. I have been privileged
to work for the church as a volunteer at the parish, diocesan, national and international levels. I was one of two Americans
asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury to meet with other chancellors from the around the communion and work on an analysis
of how the canons of each national church contribute to our shared life together. At the national level, I have been president
of the national chancellors association for the last several years and I have served as a deputy at three General Conventions.
I am a member of the national church’s Standing Commission on Constitution and Canons, and I serve on the board of directors
of The Nathan Network, which helped produce the “Safeguarding God’s Children” training program and the “Model
Policies for Ministry With Children and Youth”. At the diocesan level, I have served as Chancellor for 17 years. I am
an adjunct professor at the Iliff School of Theology and I teach a couple of courses in the Anglican Studies program, including
“Anglican and Episcopal Polity and Canon Law.” I have been a member of Good Shepherd Parish in Centennial, Colorado
for over 20 years. I enjoy helping teach a confirmation program and have served on the youth group advisory committee.
Implementing Safe-Church Policies in Your Ministry
We all want our young people to be safe and families to know that we have
done all that we can to create a safe environment in our churches. In a world that has changed and caused us to be even more
vigilant in keeping everyone safe, how do we balance ministry and policy compliance in our churches. Some ask, “How
do I adopt and comply with all those policies and still get ministry done?” Bishops, General Convention, dioceses, and
parish leadership are requiring the adoption and implementation of policies that protect our children from abuse. But, the
average Sunday School teacher, Christian Education Director, youth group leader, etc. are sometimes at a loss as to how to
make all this work.
Bring your many questions and come to this forum / seminar to learn how
to adopt and implement such policies as the Model Policies for Ministry with Children and Youth.
